Daniel Kenney "The Well" (Digital click image to left, Physical CD Click CCNow icon below)
Silk City Records is pleased to announce the release of "The Well", by singer/songwriter/arranger Daniel Kenney. Californian Daniel Kenney began writing and performing during the 1960's in the vibrant music scene around NY City and Toronto Canada. Often appearing on double bills and tours with renowned songwriters such as Jack McMahon and Son Lewis, Kenney honed his craft with a variety of acoustic and electric influences. During his time in the East, Daniel performed regularly in coffeehouses, clubs and colleges as both a solo acoustic act and in bands with Lewis, The Burkhart Brothers, Moses Gunn and a host of other singer/songwriters. Kenney’s musical style defies "categorization" as he has absorbed from a wide variety of influences, including folk, jazz, acid and country. What comes out is a varied refraction of these styles, with a decided accent on the romantic ballad and ambient and ethereal melodies backed by solid rhythms and infectious guitar-laden hooks. In what could be called long hiatus following his relocation to the Bay Area in California, Daniel pulled back from performing to focus on songwriting, composition and arranging and his efforts are well represented in "The Well".

The NJ Devil, Hook Man of Hook Mountain Road, Ghosts of the Union Hotel, the apparition of Annies' Grave.... Jersey's got its share of well-known Urban Legends. But this CD takes a long hard look at some of NJ's OTHER legends- a lot less scary and a whole lot more talented. They're the Blues performers who have been driving the vibrant music scene in the clubs, coffeehouses and festivals of the Garden State for years. This, the second UJBN compilation CD, has been created to showcase and promote the incredible musical talent lurking throughout the Garden State and to give notice that NJ's Blues scene is poised to stand alongside some of the country's long-touted Blues regions. The Blues have been alive and well and living in New Jersey for some time now. Although Blues "hot spots" like Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans have garnered their fair share of the limelight, Blues has long been a staple of clubs, coffeehouses and festivals in the Garden State. This CD was developed to show the depth and breath of this area's talent and is a co-operative effort between the artists, the United Jersey Blues Network (UJBN) and Silk City. The UJBN is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, dedicated to the education and furthering of the Blues. All proceeds from the sale of this CD will be used to establish The Johnny "Clyde" Copeland Memorial Scholarship Fund for deserving youths seeking educational opportunities in the study of music. In his homage to youthful days spent along Florida's Gulf Coast, Son Lewis has included seven new original tunes and five covers of some of his favorite songwriters and tunes, inlcuding Speedo, Crawling Kingsnake (a perennial favorite at his acoustic shows), Sleepy John Estes' Leaving Trunk and Murray McLaughlin's dark take on homelessness amongst military veterans. While most of the originals are "brand new", the collection also includes Sarasota County, which Lewis wrote back in 1970 but just now decided to record. It tells the story of the "other side" of Florida's Gulf Coast; a side seldom seen by the tourists... the poor side of the County. The title track is a Latin-tinged Blues that fairly well bounces ALL the way to Tampa! Like most of his recent recordings, this was done by Son in his First House Studio, featuring him on all instruments and vocals.

Dignified represents the 18th recording by Son Lewis and his 16th for Silk City Records, the label he helped launch in 1988! These particular sessions spontaneously occurred while recording new original material for the soundtrack of The Big Weekend for Lordi Films. During the soundtrack sessions, Son experimented with using some new arrangements wrapped around themes of his favorite covers of Blues and older Rock tunes. During the sessions, he decided that it would not work for the film, but he experienced a passionate desire to extend the songs to their full length and finish them properly… that coupled nicely with six new original songs he had been working on. As he puts it "It was like big old pieces of anthracite coming down a coal chute at me 1000 pounds a minute… I had no choice but to put it all together or it would just crush me!" Through fate and by design, Dignified represents a return for Son Lewis to some long ignored roots and influences… a tip of the hat to the masters, with a shiny new coat of paint!

The recording, also engineered and produced by Lewis, presents 11 new original tunes and covers of Sleepy John Estes and LeRoy Carr. The overall album represents some new directions for the singer while still remaining deeply rooted in Blues and Roots music. The title cut was developed for a TV Pilot about Federal Law Enforcement agents who work the US State Parks and Forests. (LPD2029) CD $12.99

The CD features some “house rocking” crowd-favorites and some simmering and solid Blues but also drifts into other more subdued feels. Blues fans will appreciate Lewis’ take on Red House, with some smoldering guitar work and jam band fans will recognize Camlet’s spot-on drums as the key driver for the title cut....

This Rocking Blues band, from Northern New Jersey, has wowed club audiences since they hit the road in 1995. Solid druming from Keith Mulhare and rock hard bass lines by Bill LaGreca prove a solid foundation for the singing and riffing of guitarist John Bastiani and keyboardist Tim Lautz. Blues veteran Son Lewis assisted Jonathan Bross in the producer''s chair on this one, but as Son put it "Producing these guys may just be the easiest gig I''ve ever had... They have a feel that goes way beyond what you see in bands today." Solidarity Singers - Solidarity, It Can't Be Beat!
"We are a street chorus, not a concert choir. Our preferred venue is a picket
line. We try to lift the spirits of people engaged in struggle and help them to
carry on. Only a few of us know how to read music, but we all know which side
we’re on.”
Over the past years, the Solidarity Singers have appeared more than a
hundred times on picket lines, at rallies for labor and other progressive
causes, and in occasional concert settings, including the annual May Day
celebrations at the Botto House/American Labor Museum, where this CD was
recorded.
This CD includes 19 songs in English, Spanish, and Yiddish dealing with labor
issues affecting public and private sector employees, union organizing, civil
rights, and current issues such as globalization, child labor, and the
exploitation of workers everywhere. It concludes with a rousing rendition of
“Solidarity Forever,” the anthem of the American labor movement, in its original
form with all of Ralph Chaplin’s rarely-sung lyrics.

It must be Sharp Edge. Formed from the ashes of the legendary Roosters, these guys offer up a taste of music designed with a party in mind. If ever there was a band that represented the blend of Chicago Blues with screaming, double overdrive guitar attack it would be The Raunchtones. Picture Elmore James jamming with ZZ Top or Charlie Musselwhite with LA Guns. Sound unusual? Maybe so, but these guys are the real deal and they are taking the Blues in a new and exciting direction with their "b... to the wall and beyond" sound. So many Blues bands hide their rocking influences, but "El Rauncho" and the band are proud of where they come from and bring it to every bit of music they create. Careful... this CD is BLINDINGLY FIERCE!

Ron Kraemer & The HurricanesBlues from River City (LPD 1034) CD $12.99
Ron Kraemer and The Hurricanes are sometimes jazzy, mostly bluesy, and always hot! Ron''s recordings feature a natural and authentic sound. While the recording techniques and processes are carefully planned, the sessions and arrangements were live and spontaneous, offering that same warmth and improvisation that could be found on the earliest recorded output of Savoy, Chess or Blue Note session recordings. Like Sonny Jones says in the liner notes, "...sit back, and get ready for the smooth sounds that emerge here and like me, you''ll swear that you''re right in front of these guys at a little table in a smoky joint off the beaten path..."
